Notice about the new English periodical

We would like to announce the name and publication date of our new periodical,
announced at last month’s Sobukai (General Assembly):

v Name: Resonance

THE SHINNYO-EN JOURNAL

v The journal will be uploaded on the online website for practitioners

(https://www.oyasono.org/) around December 15 (planned).

v The printed version of the journal will be sent out to international temples
     by December 24 (planned; date of arrival may vary due to conditions of postal service).

We will send out translations of the journal in Japanese to international temples
as soon as they are ready. Please note that the translation is for REFERENCE ONLY to assist those who require them for purposes of edification, such as Japanese reverends that travel to international temples/gathering places and Japanese-speaking guiding parents with English-speaking guiding children.

We wanted to let you know that since the December Kyoenkai in Japan is being held on the 11^th at Ogen Center, we would like to schedule an EARLIER opportunity for everyone to receive her guidance in NY as well.

Please note that we will still have the scheduled Kyoenkai (as you already see on the Dec 2012 NY schedule), which is on SAT DEC 22 (2:30pm) at the NY temple.

Festival of Oneness review!

Due to the after effects of Hurricane Sandy, we had a smaller-than-usual but a very warm and intimate ceremony at the NY temple for the Festival of Oneness. Here's one of the decorations made towards the service.

Service/Training update for NOV 2-4!

We hope everyone is well despite the challenging situation of the Sandy aftermath.

Here are some important announcements regarding upcoming services/activities during upcoming weekend.

1. Friday, Nov. 2nd: Prayer GatheringService at Manhattan Training Center is cancelled.

2. Saturday, Nov. 3rd: Merit Transfer Service, all other gohoshi, Chiryugakuin Make-up classes at NY temple are cancelled.  CG make-up classes will be rescheduled later in a month.

11月3日、NY精舎での法要とすべての活動はキャンセルといたします。智流学院メークアップもキャンセルです。後ほどスケジュールの調整をいたします。

3. Sunday, Nov. 4th:  We will hold Festival of Oneness service, candle ceremony, & sesshin training (up to Kojo Sodan sesshin).  NO Chiryugakin classes will be held, but be rescheduled for later in a month.   NO service gohoshi, ceremony coordinator gohoshi, AV gohoshi, or chorus gohoshi are necessary for this day.   For those who will be participating in the candle ceremony, we will have a brief rehearsal at 10:30 am before the service in the main altar room Gohozen.

Due to the arriving Hurricane Sandy, we have decided to close the NEW YORK temple today and tomorrow (Oct 29 and 30).

LIVE CEREMONY (candlelight offering) by those who elevated to new spiritual levels since last year's Festival of Oneness.

The New York Opera will perform (free of charge) "Xerxes" by Handel on Sat. July 21, a live musical recital, just one day before we will observe Kyoshu-sama's memorial at the NY temple. 

Note:  "Xerxes" includes the the aria "ombra mai fu"," which is probably better known as "largo" to Shinnyo-en members, as it is the music often used to remember Kyoshu-sama.

Happy 18th b-day NY temple!

Today marks the 18th anniversary of the Shinnyo-en NY temple in White Plains. It was on June 18, 1994 that Her Holiness Keishu Shinso conducted the grand opening/dedication ceremony.

We are having yet another special event in JUNE, this one at the NY temple, where we will welcome Bishop Amano for a special lecture.

Since we already have a service scheduled that day, we plan to run the service and the special lecture in separate rooms on the same day.

Please note that the service that day will be more beginner-friendly in content, while the special lecture is being geared more towards those already with some understanding of the teachings.

Changes/Additions: Prayer Serices in Washington DC

We will be having services (followed by sesshin) on the following dates in June 2012 with the new outside venue training that has commenced in April.

"Friends of Shinnyo-en and the Nirvana Sutra"- a Shinnyo-en New York Community Event

A semi-public event focusing on the Nirvana Sutra will be held on Friday, June 15th, from 6pm~9pm. 

The Nirvana Sutra is the Shakyamuni Buddha's final teaching.  It is also the core scripture of Shinnyo Buddhism.

NOTES:
This event is open to invited guests and Shinnyo practitioners (who make a reservation with the temple office).  We will take reservations while spaces last.  The venue will be shared at a later date with those who have registered.  Attendees must be able to speak and communicate effectively in English.  
* Fundamentally, this event is to benefit those who do not have access to any Japanese materials on the Nirvana sutra, both inside and outside of Shinnyo-en.
* Shinnyo practitioners can invite any guest they wish to bring.  Sign-up for guests will also be required.
*  Again, this function is for those who have a sincere interest in learning more about the Nirvana Sutra, NOT necessarily Shinnyo-en.  Dr. Shimoda is not a member of the Shinnyo-en sangha and in this way, can shed light on the Nirvana Sutra from a different perspective.  
* Attendees will be given some preparatory, background materials on the Sutra, the professor and some of his ideas on the Nirvana Sutra to look over before attending the lecture in order to stimulate participation and make the experience as engaging as possible.


Schedule:

6:00pm: Reception with light food and refreshments

7:30pm: Lecture about the Nirvana sutra by Professor Shimoda of the University of Tokyo, followed by about a half hour of Q & A.

Language: ENGLISH only (no interpretation into other languages will be provided)

We wanted to inform you that there will be added days for sesshin by reservation on Fri/Sat May 25/26 from 9am-5pm at the White Plains Temple.

May 15 service contents update

We will be showing highlights from the recent Ogen Festival (held in Japan on May 9) at the service at both White Plains and Manhattan on Tues May 15.

Why do we have the Ogen Festival Part I & II (on our schedule)?


As you may note, we have two Ogen Festival observances on our schedule this month.  Why is that?  In this centennial year of Founder Shojushinin, one of the co-founders of Shinnyo Buddhism, we have the opportunity to observe two of the special ceremonies being conducted in Japan in Her honor.

Part I will be the Ground-breaking ceremony of the Sesshin Training Hall.  This will be held on Wednesday, 5/9/12, at 11am at the NY Temple and at 7pm in our Manhattan Center.

Part II consists of Founder Shojushinin's Centennial Celebration.  This will be observed at 11am on Sunday, 5/13/12, only at our temple in White Plains.

regarding the Mar 18 2012 Reino Bodai-E

We have been informed that the upcoming REINO HATSUDO- Bodai-e/Special Bodai-e scheduled on SUN MAR 18 at the NY temple will be towards qualifying to sit at the HON-EZA scheduled on Sun May 27 at the Hawaii Temple only.

(For those who passed the Bodai-e/Special Bodai-e in Nov 2011, the tickets you received then give you a chance to attend the HON EZA for a period of one year…at either Ogen Center in Japan or in Hawaii on May 27.)

Additional info on the "Africa Saito Homa"

As mentioned in the February 2012 NIRVANA (as well as in the Winter Training guidance), there will be a special ceremony of FIRE AND WATER, held in 

Kenya by Her Holiness Keishu Shinso on March 4.  Within Shinnyo-en, we are calling it the "Africa Saito Homa." 

Regarding this ceremony, Her Holiness says:

"This fire and water ceremony-the first Shinnyo-en rite conducted on the African continent- will be performed with aims to advancing world peace and conservation of ecological systems and to offering spiritual healing to the origin of humanity. The ceremony will be conducted in a new style reflecting a deep collaboration among Shinnyo-en representatives, local Kenyan communities, and international leaders from many different faith traditions."

Homa requests can be made towards this ceremony by members as well as non-members.

We will be observing this ceremony through video on the following dates:

Sun April 15 White Plains temple

Sat April 21 Manhattan Training Center

Special Ceremony of Fire and Water in Kenya, Africa

As you may have read in the February 2012 Nirvana, Her Holiness Keishu Shinso will head to Kenya, Africa, where she will participate in a conference and religious ceremonies in Kenya in March 2012.  She mentions that the religious ceremony will consist of the elements of both "fire" and "water," and thus we are calling it the Saito Homa in Africa.

Homa forms towards this ceremony will be made available shortly.  

We are scheduling an early April date to show the video ceremony from Africa.  Stay tuned for details.

As some of you may have heard in recent words of guidance by Her Holiness Keishu-sama, there will be a special emphasis on the upcoming Spiritual Consolatory service that is held on February 4 in Japan.  Due to scheduling, we plan to observe this service on the date you as you see on the February schedule, which will be Sunday, February 26.
